HIGH-SPEED RAIL PROJECT CONNECTING MOROCCO AND SPAIN SET TO KICK-OFF

Morocco to Spain high-speed rail plans through the the Strait of Gibraltar has taken significant strive as the new proposed plan is expected to connect Spain’s capital straight to Casablanca, Morocco’s financial capital.

According to Spanish media, instead of linking traditional hubs, the revised plans will aim to connect the Spanish capital directly to Morocco’s economic powerhouse in Casablanca with the proposed travel time for this project set at approximately five and a half hours. 

The plans are in line with the shift in strategy comes as Spain, Morocco, and Portugal prepare for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. These is aimed at the construction of several projects for the upcoming World Cup that will become a pivotal infrastructure project in the region.

Meanwhile, The Spanish Society for Fixed Communication Studies across the Strait of Gibraltar (Secegsa) has been tasked to handle this project with studies showing that Secegsa has reaffirmed the project’s feasibility and projected a timeline of five years.

Madrid will serve as the primary departure point, which will be followed by a stop in Algeciras. It is also expected that the high-speed trains are set to transport passengers between four major stations spanning both countries.

The plans are in motion, but there are still so many undisclosed logical details that include the finalizing of the designs, securing funding. Also it is very important that a collaboration be agreed between Spain, Morocco, and potential external partners like the European Union, as those partnership hinges on their collaboration

So far, the project has attracted the attention of several international multilateral organizations, including the Arab Maghreb Union, the European Commission, the Barcelona Process, and the Union for the Mediterranean among others.
